As Alberta’s capital city, Edmonton is a growing and vibrant urban centre. Edmonton is Canada’s northern-most metropolis and is just a short drive away from the Rocky Mountains. With a population of over one million people spread over 684 square kilometers (264 sq miles), the City of Edmonton has a low population density but enjoys all of the major amenities larger cities have to offer.

A little known fact about Edmonton is that it has the largest stretch of urban park space in North America (7,400 hectares). Trails and parks are woven throughout the city making it easy for residents to escape city life and enjoy nature.

Culture

Also known as Festival City, Edmonton is host to numerous events and festivals during the summer months and throughout the year including the Taste of Edmonton, The Fringe, Capital City Expo, The Shakespeare Festival and more. Theatre and arts are a large part of Edmonton’s cultural fabric. World-class arts centres such as the Winspear Theatre, Jubilee Auditorium, the Art Gallery of Alberta and The Royal Alberta Museum are pillars of the capital city.

Housing

In the past, the trend for new housing developments was to expand outwards, however within the past few years Edmonton has been focusing its efforts on developing its downtown core creating higher-density areas. According to the Edmonton Real Estate Board, the average price of a single-detached home in Edmonton in 2007 was $382,022.

Economy

Part of the Alberta Advantage is enjoying no P.S.T. Edmonton is a hub of activity for the oil & gas, IT and nanotechnology sectors. In 2007, the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) magazine, a Financial Times publication, deemed Edmonton to have the “best economic potential” of any North American city with populations between 500,000 and 2 million. Edmonton also placed in the top 5 in FDI’s list of North American cities based on business development and investments.

Education

Edmonton is home to numerous award-winning post-secondary institutions such as the University of Alberta, NAIT, Grant MacEwan, etc.
